Windows 10 and its system of automatic updates takes a wildly different approach than previous iterations of the OS, a fact that many did not appreciate at all. Whatever your thoughts on that may be, there are others who always have it worse, like the people who have to manually install Windows Updates whenever they want to get the latest security fixes or performance improvements on their computers. A lot of the tools previously available for the purpose of installing offline updates do not support Windows 10 but, thankfully for you, there are a couple that do work on it.
Note: Both tools mentioned in this guide are portable, meaning you just have to download and run them without installing anything. This allows you to place them in portable storage devices, such as USB drive, along with the updates so you can install them on multiple PCs without an internet connection.
When you launch Portable Update for the first time, the application will ask you to download a few files that are necessary for it to work properly. The files in question will allow the app to search, download and install Windows updates whenever it needs to. The boxes marked red must be downloaded while the ones marked blue should be updated. Everything else is optional but you may need to get them if you run into any issues.
After selecting the files, click on the “Start” button to download them. Should the application fail to download a file on its own, visit the provided URL, download the file manually and place it on the Toolbox folder of Portable Update. Note that the folder will only be created once you have actually ran the application for the first time.Once you have all the required files, Portable Update will take you to its Settings tab where you can view information about your system.
At this point you should head over to the Search tab and click on the “Start” button so that the application can find available updates.
The search tool will ignore updates you have already installed in your system so if you would like to get those again, you will have to uninstall them from your computer first. In case you do not know how to do that, follow our guide here for more information.
Portable Update can provide a lot of useful information about each update, including their severity and whether you will need to restart your system after installing them or not. To download and install updates, head over to the respective tabs on Portable Update, select your desired items and click on the “Start” button. But since you probably want to install them in another PC, you can grab the entire Portable Update folder and take it to another computer first. Alternatively, you can find all updates the app downloads in the Cache folder.
This tool is aimed at more advanced users as its main interface and the way it handles updates is far more convoluted than Portable Update. As you can see, the main window provides a ton of options that you must configure before continuing. First, select your operating system from the list. Make sure you choose the correct architecture as x86 files will not work on x64 systems and vice versa. In the “Options” field you will be able to select updates for additional Windows services such as .NET Frameworks and Windows Defender definitions though everything is, as the title says, optional. Similar options can also be enabled in the “Office” tab. The “Legacy products” tab is reserved for operating systems which are no longer actively supported by Microsoft, such as Windows Vista.
If you only want to install updates on another computer, you will need to enable some additional settings. First, insert a USB drive into your computer and select it via the browse button (ellipsis icon) near the bottom. Then, select both the “Copy updates for selected products into directory” and “Only prepare ISO/USB” options.
When you are happy with your choices, click on the Start button and let WSUS do its thing. The application will do everything from the command line so do not be alarmed when CMD pops up. Finally, if you allowed the “Verify downloaded updates” option, the whole process will take additional time as the application ensures everything went smoothly.
