New Google-backed underwater cable to give big speed boost to the Internet

Submarine telecommunications cables are always an interesting subject to discuss. Improvements to the underwater cables have a noticeable difference in internet speeds around the world and that is what FASTER is aiming for as well. Google along with China Mobile, China Telecom, Global Transit, KDDI and SingTel are backing the $300 million fiber optic cable that will run between the US and Japan.

The cable is specifically designed to improve the internet’s speed and stability between Asia and the Americas. Access to online games, video streams and other kinds of content that require a fast connection should be a lot better after everything has been said and done. The cable offers an incredible 60 terabits per second of bandwidth between the two regions, an incredible speed no matter how you look at it.

If there are no implications along the way, FASTER’s construction will be done by the second quarter of 2016. A difference in internet speeds will be noticeable immediately after the cable’s installation is finished so expect things to be a lot smoother in two years’ time. It might look like a huge investment but all companies involved will benefit from it greatly.
