It’s clear that Windows Vista isn’t a dead OS, in fact, as we all know, the next operating system, Windows 7 is based on Windows Vista. It also seems that Microsoft is working at the next Service Pack for Windows Vista, namely SP2. While the beta invites were sent out not so long ago, rumors are that Windows Vista SP2 will be launched somewhere in January 2009.

The popular open-source office suite  OpenOffice.org had its 3.0 version update officially announced today by its developers. OpenOffice.org comes bundled with many new features and improvements but I think the most important are, its Mac OS compatibility and the support for the OpenDocument 1.2 Format standard.

We already knew that the next Windows after Vista will be Windows 7 but hell, we thought this is a codename, like we were used to. Apparently, Microsoft decided that Windows 7 is a very good name for its next OS.

Microsoft just announced today that the next version of Silverlight, the 2.0 will be ready for shipment tommorow, 14 October. Another good news is that, due to the WSUS service capabilities, Silverlight will automatically be upgraded silently. What this means is if you already have SIlverlight 1.0 or above, it will automatically upgrade itself quietly.

Brian Goldfarb, the head of the Developer Platform group, stated that Silverlight will also gain several interesting projects, projects aimed towards the open-source community.

Microsoft released 2 days ago the Touchless SDK multi-touch technology. This basically means that developers will have the possibility of building multi-touch applications using a webcam and a color marker. Utilizing the webcam, applications can track the location and size of the color marker to enable multi-touch functionality without touching a surface, as stated by Microsoft.

Believe it or not, Microsoft is now offering its server virtualization software as a free download for anyone. Better yet, the new version of Microsoft Hyper V-Server is a stand-alone edition that doesn’t require MIcrosoft Server installed on the machine.

Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 is a great choice for customers who want a basic and simplified virtualization solution for consolidating servers as well as for development and test environments.

Developers will be thrilled, Microsoft announced recently the pre-beta launch of the anticipated WIndows 7 operating system. Windows 7 attempts to “wash” the fiasco generated by Windows Vista at its release, but some are still very skeptical regarding this new WIndows version.

Developers will have the chance to see the new Windows 7 Alpha in action at the Professional Developers Conference in October. With his pre-beta launch, Microsoft clearly wants to stay on track with the final release, scheduled in 2010.

Hello, I’m a PC, is the start of the new Microsoft ad campaign. After dumping the not-so-funny Jerry Seinfeld-Bill Gates duo, Microsoft launched their next level Microsoft ad. In this new commercial, Microsoft underlines (bolded) the PC and its worldwide use.

I must say that the new campaign, while going more corporate, is far more better than the previous Gates-Seinfeld ads.
