gmerRootkits were and still are  a pain in the behind for many of us. A rookit is basically a piece of maliciouos software that allows an attacker to do stuff, bad stuff with your system. Fortunately there are many anti-rootkit applications out there, detectors and removers. Gmer is a nifty little software that detects and removes rootkits.

It scans for:

- hidden processes
- hidden threads
- hidden modules
- hidden services
- hidden files
- hidden Alternate Data Streams
- hidden registry keys
- drivers hooking SSDT
- drivers hooking IDT
- drivers hooking IRP calls
- inline hooks

You can give Gmer a test try, it doesn’t load as resident and eats almost no memory. For instructions, features and changelogs, please visit the developer’s website.

Download and install Gmer

Of course, there are some drawbacks to any automated task, older drivers are not always found or some incorrect versions are slipped here and there, but overall, a driver update scanner is strongly recommended.
