Shazam for the iPhone: Identify external music

Apple released yet another iPhone ad, but this time, a rather different but cool application, Shazam. Shazam will recognize any captured external music (via mic) in  seconds and it will display detailed informations such as artist, song and album.

Imagine you are walking on the street and you hear a song that you love, but you don’t know who sings. Pull out your iPhone, start Shazam and wham, you identified it. How cool is that? Now, altough I love this application, I’m wondering what sound recognition capabilities it has since there are millions of artists out there, many uknown and all the ads and user reviews are with known tracks only. I’m guessing we will see, but Shazam is clearly a promising application.
