Apple just released an update for the raw digital camera support in Leopard, iPhone ’08 and Aperture 2. After this update, the following digital cameras have been added and supported:

- Nikon D90

- Sony DSLR-A900

- Canon EOS 50D

- Nikon Coolpix P6000

Apple states that this updated addresses several other problems such as stability and issues related with other cameras. Overall, this update is worth to be installed and we strongly suggest you to.

You can download and install the Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.3 manually from the Apple’s main site or automatically via the updater.

I installed this update on an iMac G5 and it has caused lot’s of grief.

    The installation requires a Restart.

After the Restart my mouse pointer was frozen in the top-left corner of the screen and I was unable to log in as normal.

Searching on the web (on another machine) found a couple of suggestions to a) try resetting the SMU and b) resetting the PRAM.

Resetting the SMU allowed me to hear how noisy the fans can be! I have never heard them before. It did not help the start-up problem.

Resetting the PRAM made no difference to the start-up problem.

I followed other advice and removed the power cable from the machine for 5 or more minutes. This resolved the fan problem that had been introduced by restting the SMU.

Eventually, I managed to get back into the system by using a Safe Boot (i.e. holding down a Shift key after the startup tone until the ‘propellor’ appeared.

The system appeared to settle down after that and I was able to shutdown and restart and use the system normally.

However, today, again, the mouse was frozen in the top-left corner and I have had to use a Safe Boot to get into the system.

How does one de-install an OS X Update???

I’m guessing that you don’t have Mac OS Leopard..and this update is aimed at that version mainly

As I know, you can’t rollback an Apple OS update and you need to reinstall the Mac OS X from your install CDs/DVD.

    Cezar,

    I am using OS X10.5.5 !

    Karnal,

as it is not the first time that Apple have issued a flawed update, it is time that they provided an de-installlation facility. Re-installing from scratch is hardly an acceptable option.

Thanks both for your interest and comments.

Hmm, ya I agree with that statement regarding Apple. However, I’ll look into it and I’ll ask some Mac freaks I know..stay tuned, maybe we can fix this

Does this update appear anywhere in System Preferences or has any references there? Also, maybe this sounds stupid, but have you configured your Time Machine? Maybe you can roll it back using TM

    Cezar,

there is nothing obvious in System Preferences – a Spotlight search for ‘camera’ in System Preferences reveals nothing.

I have run Disk Utility to Repair Disk Permissions and that did sort out a few files.

My system has been running OK since this morning after restarting after the Safe Boot log-in.

I’ll post again tomorrow if the same symptoms appear.

Thanks again for your interest and suggestions.

I purchased Nikon D90 and installed the software on my MAC machine. I didn’t face any problem.
