October 31, 2008, Author: Cezar Renta

As we warned you several days ago, Ubuntu 8.10 codename Intrepid Ibex has been released yesterday and it’s ready to be downloaded and installed. The new version comes with improved for media devices, 3G cards support and loads of other performance/improvements updates and features.

Let’s review some of the important Ubuntu 8.10 features and updates.

Gnome 2.24 and the improved File Roller (file manager)
The file manager has been updated from its core and it comes with a major feature, tabbed browsing. It’s not the first file manager in Linux that has this feature, KDE has that for some time now, but it’s an important feature nevertheless.

Dynamic Kernel Module Support
The Dynamic Kernel Module Support (DKMS) is your user-friendly kernel updater. What this means is that you can rebuild kernels or rebuild modules with ease. This feature is very important for users but also driver developers, DKMS allowing driver updated without waiting for new kernels.

X.Org 7.4
While not the best out there, the X11 desktop is taken a level bit higher, by adding hot plug support for display devices.

You can check out see the Ubuntu 8.10 release notes page for a more detailed view over this new update.
