Believe it or not, Microsoft is now offering its server virtualization software as a free download for anyone. Better yet, the new version of Microsoft Hyper V-Server is a stand-alone edition that doesn’t require MIcrosoft Server installed on the machine.
Microsoft Hyper-V Server 2008 is a great choice for customers who want a basic and simplified virtualization solution for consolidating servers as well as for development and test environments. Hyper-V Server 2008 only offers the most basic of virtualization features, making it ideal for:
- Test and Development
- Basic Server Consolidation
- Branch Office Consolidation
- Hosted Desktop Virtualization (VDI)
Offering Hyper-V Server 2008 for free, MIcrosoft cclearly wants to invest in its customers..and their servers. The catch is that even if its free, you need a Windows license on the machine, but if you already own some Windows-based servers, that wouldn’t be a problem.
