Everybody was very thrilled about the new version of iTunes, the iTunes 8. However, things are not going very well for Windows Vista users, iTunes 8 doesn’t seem to like Vista at this moment. Some users reported blue screens of death (BSOD) the moment they plug their iPod. Forums are assaulted with complains and replies regarding this issue, but it seems that a downgrade to iTunes 7.7 fixes this problem.

The overall conclusions seem to center around a driver problem, “GEARAspiWDM.sys” that allows 3rd party applications to write to the CD and DVD drives. Problems with this driver were reported in the past, but it seems this isn’t the only driver with problems in this iTunes situation. An USB controller driver for Vista appears in the crash logs, making this problem logic since the iPod is connected via USB.

I’m sure this problem will be resolved soon and we should expect several patches in the near future.
