Some of the best flash games out there often prove to be successful combinations of two or more game categories. This is the case of Cat God vs Sun King, the latest game created by Nerdook that managed to stand up in the crowd as soon as we laid our eyes on it.
You have to take the role of Cat God, who was betrayed by his subjects in favor of the Sun King. The plot consists in the Sun King’s intention of using the slaves to build him a temple that will greatly increase his strength. As Cat God you must obviously do everything in your power to stop the construction before the temple is finished.
The action part consists of you exercising your feline wits and god-like abilities to crush all the slaves as they build the temple layer upon layer, before they reach the top of the screen. Progressing through levels, you will have to face increased difficulty but also receive new abilities, the possibility to upgrade old ones and golden scarabs (points for achievements), with which you can buy cool power-up items from the bazaar. We had a good laugh when we saw their names, such as the Jar of Camel Piss and the World’s Second Smallest Axe, as we always welcome a good dose of humor within a game, no matter the genre.
The strategy part is when you have to choose on what items to spend your golden scarabs, because if you don’t pick them wisely you might not handle the more advanced levels where the game-play gets a lot harder and the slave spawning rate is ridiculously high. Also new types of troops appear in each level and every one of them has some special ability to counteract one of your powers, so you have to be careful to use the right one at the right moment.
The game is mouse enabled and the cartoon-style graphics have a clean and pleasant look. Navigation through menus and game controls go smoothly and we frankly didn’t find anything dis-likable in this game.
Cat God vs Sun King gave us some moments of relaxation but also a good challenge for our skills and logic with occasional laughs. What more could we ask of it?
