Wordpress

Today, WordPress got its announced update to the 2.6 version. Although this update was not scheduled now, I can say I’m impressed by the new features. Bloggers will cheerish this new version and WP’s functionality gets better and better with every new update. The 2.6 version is named “Tyner” after the jazz pianist McCoy Tyner and it’s available for download.

Let’s review some important features of WordPress 2.6:

Post Revisions

WordPress has raised the auto save function to a whole new level, allowing you to see who made changes to the posts, what changes and when. This acually gives you the possibility to see the previous versions of your edited posts and the possibility to restore those versions.

Press This!

The Press This! bookmark can be added into your toolbar, providing a pop-up to do posts to your WordPress blog. What this means is that, while browsing a YouTube page, using Press This!, the video will be extracted autoamtically with its embed code. This can be used within Flickr also, in the same manner.

Gears – Speed up your blogging

This options allows you to cache your blog’s images, css files or JS files locally into your computer, greatly speeding up your blog speed. This is very useful if you have a very slow connection while traveling or simply, you want to browse your blog very faster. The developers stated that the “Gears” option will contain many uses in the future, besides the caching system. At this moment, you can install Gears only in Firefox and IE, but support for Opera and Safari is coming up.

Theme Preview

A long waited feature, now we can preview the installed themes without activating them. A window will pop-up, with the exact preview of the selected theme, allowing us to test the themes without installing other plugins and without bothering the users.
