openwithI need to start by saying this: THEY STOLE MY IDEEA! Well, life sucks and if you’re not fast enough, you’re gonna lose anyway.  With that out of the closet, let’s get to the real deal here. OpenWith.org is a freeware application that can help you open any known or uknown file types by suggesting a free application that can use/manage that file type. Let’s say you have a .rar archive and you don’t have WinRar, because even if it’s trial, the final version is not free. OpenWith.org will suggest you 7-Zip, a very good archiver/unarchiver that can also manage rar files AND is free to download.

Don’t worry, OpenWith is not intrusive at all, it will only provide you with detailed informations about the given file type and a list of download links for free applications that can help you manage those files. You can use their database on-site directly at OpenWith.org , or you can install the standalone application. Of course, OpenWith.org is aimed for the beginners mainly or those family members/friends that are bugging you everyday with ‘support calls’, but overall I think it’s a brilliant database to have around, even for the advanced.

Also take a look at http://www.grateware.com. It is a pretty powerful search engine that only finds freeware programs. I use it everyday.
