The principle is easy, as most of the servers accept multiple connections and your download manager does just that, opens multiple connections to the same file and downloads it faster.

This is valid because most servers have transfer limits, so multiple connections of the same speed...you do the math. On servers without transfer limit, this is useless of course, because you download with your full speed anyway.
