卫慧的半自传小说《上海宝贝》，一九九九年九月由渖阳的春风文艺出版社推出，半年内售出超过十一万本（盗印本不计），引爆了中国文坛广大争议、风靡了中国年轻一代、吸引了国际媒体报导。中国《解放日报》报导，北京新闻媒体和文化管理部门以《上海宝贝》描写女性手淫、同性恋和吸毒，将本书裁定为「腐朽堕落和受西方文化毒害」的典型，在四月宣布禁售。中国官方在五月中旬发布全国禁售令。
