Grant Allen (1848-1899) was a science writer, author and novelist, and a successful upholder of the theory of evolution. It was during a holiday while at the college that Allen became exposed to the works of Charles Darwin and Edward Clodd; and became an agnostic and committed socialist. Upon arriving back in England in 1876 he immediately contacted Edward Clodd, and they remained friends for the rest of his life.
