How To: Connect to Wi-Fi using WPS on Windows 10

If you choose to connect to Wi-Fi using PS on Windows 10 devices, it will allow for a faster connection. And it gets even better – you don’t need to manually type the network password. Of course, if you have a simple password that’s not such a big problem, but if you’re like me and love your lengthy alphanumeric passwords then the WPS standard (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) will save you a lot of hassle.

This wireless networking standard was designed to speed up establishing connections between wireless devices and routers and it supports only the networks that use WPA or WPA2 Personal security.

So how does Wi-Fi Protected Setup work? Typically, the first time you want to connect a Windows 10 device to a Wi-Fi network, you need to select it in the list of visible networks and this means you have to know the network’s name (SSID), as well as its password. Once you select the network you need to type in the password.

With WPS you won’t have to go through either of these steps and I’ll explain below how you can connect to WI-Fi using WPS on Windows 10.

Now you’ll be prompted to enter the network security key, in other words, your Wi-Fi password. Below the password input field you will see a message that says you can also connected to then network using the button on your router.

Sadly, it doesn’t say which button, although the message is referring to the WPS button.

This button is found on the back or on one of the sides. On some router models it’s marked as WPS which is as straightforward as it gets. Others have a Wi-Fi signal icon, and in some cases the icon is something else.

If yours isn’t obvious a Google search with WPS button + your router’s model should do the trick.

Once you locate the WPS button on your router, press and hold it for a few seconds. Windows 10 will automatically receive the wireless settings from the router and connect to the Wi-Fi network. This way you’ll never need to type in the password again.

The OS will remember the settings, so you only need to do this for the first time. And once you go through this guide, you will always know how to connect to Wi-Fi using WPS on Windows 10, which will allow you to setup a Wi-Fi connection on a new device or after reinstalling Windows much faster.
