Recovery Star Description
Recovery Star - Raid-like fault-tolerance file codec
Why was this program created?
Modern optical storage is an effective mean of data storage and transfer (since they have the cheapest ratio of cost to volume). Since market demand is very high, often media available does not correspond to the standards created for this media. Manufacturers allow such deviation in quality only because the correcting abilities built into optical media are high enough that even lower quality media may be recorded and be readable, albeit at lower speed. But the main problem of such low quality becomes the fact that ?durability? of media?s system of corrections of errors is extremely low, and any, even the slightest of scratches may damage the data.
It?s simple. The tracks on the optical disks are spiral, and that?s why drive cannot follow it with a 100% accuracy. If low quality media is being used, the chance of disk failure may increase significantly, and under such conditions, long term storage of data, and sometimes even just regular usage of it, becomes impossible. But, that?s the way market works, and consumer hardly has a chance to objectively evaluate quality of every blank he/she purchases.
And so we deduct, that the sum of all means of low level error correction provides the required reliability only if the media corresponds to all standards. When a low quality or untested media is used, additional means of error correction are required.
How does Recovery Star work?
During excessive encoding of a file it is broken down into multiple volumes. Then, the excessive volumes are calculated based on main volumes, and a check sum is calculated for every file. During the restoration of information, the decoder evaluates the damage existing in the data, and if possible, rebuilds the lost volumes with following joining into initial file, which represents the restored data.
