PostgreSQL is an advanced open-source relational database system designed to run on all major operating systems such as Windows, Linux and UNIX (BSD , AIX, HP-UX, SGI IRIX, Mac OS X, Solaris, Tru64).

PostgreSQL includes almost all SQL92 and SQL99 data types such as INTEGER, NUMERIC, BOOLEAN, CHAR, VARCHAR, DATE, INTERVAL, and TIMESTAMP, provides support for foreign keys, views, joins, triggers and stored procedures (in many different languages) and is ACID compliant.

The program is also capable to support storage of binary large objects such as video, images, sounds. PostgreSQL is equipped with native programming interfaces for C and C++, Java, Perl, .NET, Ruby, Python, ODBC and Tcl along with extensive documentation.

PostgreSQL is also an enterprise class database with advanced features like point in time recovery, Multi-Version Concurrency Control, tablespaces, nested transactions, asynchronous replication, online/hot backups, write ahead logging for fault tolerance and a comprehensive query planner/optimizer. Additionally the program supports multibyte character encodings, Unicode, international character sets.
